Library onboarding

1. Kick-off

The first step to successfully moving across to OpenAthens federated access is the kick-off meeting.

2. Create accounts

There are two main options for creating user accounts - connecting to your institutional directory or creating new OpenAthens accounts.

3. Activate resources

Perhaps the most crucial element of your OpenAthens onboarding process as far as users are concerned is making sure all the resources that your institution subscribes to are set up.

4. Update links

Using a new resource authentication system requires that you update any links on your library portal to either give users access to relevant content or send them to the login page

5. Integrate with other apps

OpenAthens is designed to interact successfully with many third-party applications in a number of ways.

6. Handover

The final step of the set-up process is to make sure that all users know about the new system for accessing resources and where they can go if they need further help or information.

Service provider onboarding

1. Platform assessment

The first step to successfully adopting OpenAthens is an assessment of your own platform.

2. Platform upgrade

Your team will need to complete necessary development work on your platform. For OpenAthens to work you will need to have Open ID connect installed and may need to upgrade your entitlement system.

3. OpenAthens Keystone setup

Once you have implemented OIDC and have made the necessary changes to your subscriptions management system you can start the Keystone configuration.

4. Add OpenAthens Wayfinder

Using a new resource authentication system requires that you update any links on your library portal to either give users access to relevant content or send them to the login page

5. Go live

We will go through a final test with you before completing the OpenAthens Keystone setup.

6. Enable access

Enable access for subscribing libraries already using OpenAthens.
